The next time you look up and see a balloon get worried because it may put your electricity out at your home. How you ask? The Mylar balloon, which cost about three dollars, is made of a metallic material and when it comes in contact with a power line it can cause a power surge. The power surge that the balloon can cause can short circuit substation equipment and lead to power outage.

You may be thinking, yeah right, a three dollar balloon can cause all that. Well, ask the over 100,000 ComEd customers who have suffered loss of power to their homes in the last four years as a result of a Mylar balloon coming into contact with power lines in their neighborhood.

Therefore, the next time you accidently or otherwise intentionally let go of a balloon outside think about the potential of power outage at your home.
