To convey or capture the new function for the kitchen, most homeowners are demanding an open design to the kitchen with an island as the central working area. Whether that working area is for preparation of food, for doing homework, or entertaining is determined by the family’s needs.
More importantly, the centralized working island takes into consideration two distinct zones in its design. Zone one is for preparation of food. Zone two is for entertainment.
To accomplish these distinct functions, the central island may have a primary sink and serve as a dining table, as well. It may, for that matter, serve as a secondary food preparation area.
To accomplish the second function of entertainment, the island must have a raised ledge to shield the cooking and food preparation, while adding a place for guest to congregate.
To be an effective and efficient kitchen remodel, the new design can not leave the cook out. In essence, the functionality of the kitchen is also important. In general, a cook likes to have everything that is needed to prepare the meal within reach. This area is often referred to as a working triangle.
In this design, the working island is the central focal point. The latter creates a U-shaped area for cooking and a rectangular area for entertainment.
The other features of this kitchen design include two double hung windows that flank the stove and are directly behind the island. By having the stove within 12 to 15 inches of the island, the cook can have the convenience of preparing a meal and entertaining at the same time.
The next focal point for the cook is the refrigerator. The refrigerator is located at the opposite end of the island and it completes the cook’s triangle for food preparation.
The last critical item for a kitchen is cabinet space. Because this kitchen had the two double hung windows a lot of the upper cabinet space was lost. To make up for it, a nice sized butler’s pantry was added. The pantry is versatile with its own sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator.
So the next time you are planning to remodel a kitchen, consider the windows. Windows let in natural light and can in the case of this remodel, offer a challenge that takes an innovative and unusually pleasant approach to get around.
Lastly, the footprint and square footage of the space has to be considered. The kitchen that was being remodeled was only 340 square feet. With the open concept, the kitchen gained a 112 foot butler’s pantry and an added feeling of an additional 500 square feet with the open concept.
