The reader may be wondering why I am blogging about the health care reform plan. Well, it is easy to understand when you look at the economy and the factors that have affected the affordability of housing, and health care reform is no expectation. Any item that has an increase in cost or a potential increase is newsworthy for the struggling home owner.

The recent health care reform plan is believed to be an item that may cause financial strife if not handled properly. The dilemma concerns college aged children’s health care. Many parents want to retain health care coverage for their college aged children until they are twenty six, graduate from college, and/or get a job of their own with benefits, but the reform may make that difficult for some parents due to cost.

According to an article in the Chicago Red Eye, employers are left with making a decision whether to cover college aged dependents or not. In addition, both parents and employers have to determine based upon the new legislation how the parents’ insurance company and employer will pay for the coverage. There are a number of disparities of the cost of the coverage.

In some cases, according to this same article, “some families may have to wait until 2011 to get their kids covered, particularly if the parents are working for a large employer, benefits experts and government officials say.”

However, the good news is that several major national insurers are willing to extend coverage to college aged dependents prior to 2011 so that the dependents do not have a break in coverage. However, the question still remains what cost does this coverage have to parents? Currently, the employer may be force to charge the unsuspecting parents an additional percentage of their pay for this coverage despite the fact that the children were covered under the previous health care plan.

Therefore, I believe that is important that the home owner plead his or her case to the president, so that this can be addressed before it is too late.
