Preparing and preventative maintenance for the winter applies to more than just your home, it applies to your car, as well.
It is recommended that you ensure that the vehicle has antifreeze in it. Believe it or not antifreeze helps heat your car. I found that out myself. Two winters ago, my antifreeze resevior had a leak. Of course, I did not find out it has a leak in the resevior until I took it in to the dealership, but anyway the antifreeze was leaking out of the vehicle. I would have the heater on in the car and it would all of a sudden stop putting out heat upon further investigation it was discovered that the antifreeze was low. Becuase the engine was warm from driving it is not recommended to open the radiator cap under these circumstances because of the pressure so the antifreeze was put in the resevior. Luckly, it was a slow leak so enough antifreeze would get into the radiator to allow the heater to work again. Therefore, it is very important to make sure there is antifreeze and leaks in your radiation system.
Still yet, it is also recommended to check for proper installation of tires in the winter.
Because winters can often time be harsh, it is recommened that you buy a roadside kit for your car to include flares. Having blankets, flashlights, extra hats, and gloves will be beneficial if you are delayed on the highway because of winter storm accidents, road closures, etc.
Anothre important often overlooked preventative maintenance issue is windshield wipers. There are winter wiper blades available, but not necessary. However, have good working blades are necessary, so check and replace blades, if necessary.
If you plan a long trip during the winter make sure you notify someone of the intend route and ensure that you have your cell phone hand charger in case there is an emergency.
Other items that are helpful during the winter are:
- ice scraper and brush
- boots
- tire traction material such as sand or cat litter
- shovel
- jumper cables
- food
- water
- first aid kit
- at least half tank of gas at all times
- extra antifreeze, oil, de-icing wiper fluid
Remember Chicago winter can be harsh; therefore, being prepared is very important.
